Overview

Begin your journey with our Introduction to Counselling (Level 2 equivalent) course.

If you would like to do a short, experiential course, to find out more about what is involved in becoming a counsellor, then this is the course for you! Perhaps you are already working in a listening capacity and would like to know more about how to support others.  Or perhaps you are curious about counselling and personal development and would like a chance to find out more. If so, you will benefit from this training. This course also has a strong personal development aspect to it.

It is a 12 session course, one morning per week.

Suitable for people engaged in a caring or therapeutic role, or anyone interested in counselling skills, the course attracts people with diverse professional and personal backgrounds. It offers the opportunity to enhance further career and life skills, and can be a stepping stone to accessing counselling and therapeutic professions.

This course has been Quality Checked by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). This course alone is not a route to the Accredited Register nor does it fully equip a graduate to practice as a qualified counsellor.

Entry requirements

No prior knowledge or experience required.

No interview is required

This course is open to anyone over 19yrs of age, and can be a valuable addition to any CV.

This course attracts people from a range of professions, and no prior academic attainment is required.

Course Details

The Introduction to Counselling (Level 2 equivalent) course is an entry point for those who would like to learn more about Counselling. This course leads to the Foundation in Counselling (Level 3 equivalent) course, part of the progression route for training to become a counsellor.  It is suited to people working in the helping professions and those who want to engage in personal development.

The emphasis is on experiential learning and students will develop self-awareness and reflective practice. This is not an academic course but does require journal writing and the creation of a personal development log. counselling skills taught on this course are underpinned with current theoretical knowledge.

Students are encouraged to explore creatively, in a well held, supportive and professional environment.

Full course fees are £595

Your place is secured when we receive your application form and deposit of £295 (non-refundable)

  • The outstanding balance of £300 can then be made in full before the course start date.
  • monthly payment plan is available at £110* for 3 months. *(This includes a monthly administration fee of £10.00 for instalment payments). Overseas students are required to pay in full.

Upon successful completion of this course students will receive £100 credit towards their next Heartwood course.

Syllabus

This Heartwood course is a first stepping stone and an introduction to the skills and personal development required for the counselling and therapeutic profession.

This course is a stand-alone course, a first port of call guiding the learner to counselling and therapeutic theories and concepts.  This course has been Quality Checked by the National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society (NCPS). If desired learners can go onto further study, and to progress towards Accredited Counsellor status with an Accredited Counselling body.

Heartwood’s theoretical approach presented on the course is Integrative and Holistic. We will look at integrating models, techniques, theories and a range of modalities that suit the individual client. Whilst working on developing relationship skills which will aid therapeutic work.

The course encourages a lot of personal development through experiential exercises and development of counselling skills such as Welcoming, Active listening skills, Non-verbal listening skills, Empathy and concepts such as Carl Roger’s Basis for the Relationship.

Material for the course is derived from Gestalt Therapy, Person Centred Therapy and Mindfulness based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

We will explore our personal development with a reflective approach through self-enquiry, self-awareness, observations and feedback. We will learn approaches on how to stay safe when sharing emotions, how to use a life graph, and how to shape to self-gratitude.

Assessment

The course requires the following:

  • A minimum of 90% attendance on tuition days
  • Completion of a learning journal
  • Completion of all course assignments
  • Demonstration of practical skills
