This experiential weekend workshop provides a focused exploration of transference within a group setting, facilitated through integrative methods incorporating Person-Centred, Gestalt, and Psychodynamic/Psychoanalytic approaches.

Designed for practitioners seeking to deepen their understanding of transference dynamics in therapeutic practice, the workshop offers an immersive, reflective, and interactive learning experience. Pre-course reading will be available on the Heartwood Online Platform.

Overview

The Importance of Understanding Transference in Experiential Group Work
For both trainees and qualified counsellors, understanding transference within experiential group work is crucial. Transference—the unconscious redirection of feelings from past relationships onto present ones—can significantly influence therapeutic interactions and group dynamics. In a group therapy setting, these dynamics become magnified, offering rich opportunities for insight and growth. Experiential group work involves engaging in live, real-time relational processes where participants explore their interpersonal patterns in a professionally held space. This method allows practitioners to become more aware of their own relational tendencies, enhance their ability to work with transference and countertransference, and develop deeper empathy and attunement to clients’ unconscious material.
It is essential that participants demonstrate ‘self-awareness’ and have already engaged in personal therapy to identify unresolved issues from childhood relationships. This foundation enables deeper engagement with the experiential process, fostering a greater capacity to recognise and manage transference in both group and individual therapeutic settings.

Tutor

Matt Martys HCPC, BACP (Accredited), BAAT

My roles as a tutor, psychotherapist, and supervisor bring both challenges and satisfaction. Engaging with people in this way and witnessing the depth of our shared humanity often leads to moments of inspiration and sorrow. I draw on my experience and training to endeavour to create a space for genuine, authentic contact.

My career as a therapist began in the NHS in East London in 1992. In this first post-qualified role, I confronted mortality while working with people who were dying, from diagnosis to death. It was a profound experience. Since then, I have worked as a therapist in various settings, mostly within the NHS, charities, and education. I have intentionally worked with a wide range of people facing diverse emotional, psychological, and behavioural matters, broadening my understanding of the human experience.

Over the years, my training has encompassed psychodynamic, Jungian, humanistic, and gestalt approaches. These methodologies have informed my practice, helping me to try to find the best ways to support the people I work with. I hold qualifications in counselling (Dip), psychotherapy (PG Dip), and supervision (Dip). I am an accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). As a qualified Art Psychotherapist (MA), I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT).
