Creativity in the Therapy Room: Using Creative Methods in Counselling Practice

Date: Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th September 2026

This experiential weekend workshop explores the use of creativity within therapeutic practice. Drawing on integrative approaches including Person-Centred, Gestalt, and expressive/creative methods, the workshop will introduce participants to a range of creative processes that can support emotional exploration, insight, and relational awareness in therapy.

The course is designed for practitioners who wish to expand their therapeutic toolkit and explore how creative expression can help clients access feelings, memories, and experiences that may be difficult to articulate through words alone. Through experiential exercises, reflection, and discussion, participants will gain confidence in introducing creative approaches into their clinical work while maintaining strong therapeutic boundaries and ethical awareness. Pre-course reading will be available on the Heartwood Online Platform.

Overview

The Importance of Creativity in Therapeutic Practice
Creativity can provide powerful pathways for emotional expression and psychological exploration. While traditional talk therapy remains central to many therapeutic approaches, creative methods such as drawing, imagery, metaphor, movement, and symbolic expression can deepen the therapeutic process by engaging different modes of awareness and communication.
For both trainees and experienced practitioners, developing comfort with creative approaches can enhance therapeutic flexibility and responsiveness. Creative processes often allow clients to access unconscious or pre-verbal material, support emotional regulation, and encourage reflection from new perspectives. In a safely held therapeutic space, creativity can facilitate exploration, self-discovery, and integration of experience.
Experiential learning is central to understanding how and when creative techniques may be helpful in practice. This workshop therefore emphasises participation, reflection, and discussion, allowing practitioners to experience creative methods themselves before considering their application with clients.
