Working Therapeutically with Anger: Understanding, Containing and Transforming Anger in the Therapy Room

Date: Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th October 2026

This experiential weekend workshop explores the role of anger in therapeutic work and how counsellors and psychotherapists can work with it constructively and safely. Drawing on integrative approaches including Person-Centred, Gestalt, and Psychodynamic perspectives, the workshop will examine the emotional, relational, and developmental dimensions of anger within therapeutic practice.
Anger is often one of the most challenging emotions for both clients and therapists. Clients may struggle to express it safely, may fear it, or may act it out in ways that disrupt relationships. Practitioners may also experience uncertainty about how to contain, explore, and respond to anger within the therapeutic relationship. This workshop provides a structured space to explore these dynamics through experiential exercises, reflection, and discussion. Pre-course reading will be made available on the Heartwood Online Platform (HOP).

Overview

The Importance of Understanding Anger in Therapeutic Practice
Anger is a natural and often protective emotion that can signal injustice, unmet needs, boundary violations, or unresolved emotional pain. However, when anger has been suppressed, feared, or expressed destructively, it can lead to relational difficulties, emotional distress, and psychological fragmentation.
For counsellors and psychotherapists, developing confidence in working with anger is essential. Therapeutic work may involve helping clients recognise, tolerate, and express anger in ways that promote awareness, self-regulation, and healthier relational patterns. At the same time, therapists must also be able to reflect on their own responses to anger, including discomfort, avoidance, or countertransference reactions.
Through experiential learning and reflective practice, this workshop invites participants to deepen their understanding of anger, explore their own relationship to this emotion, and develop skills for working with anger safely and effectively in therapy.
